Session:

The 2018 General Assembly session has officially gaveled in! This year will be a long session (60 days) where we tackle important issues such as healthcare, the opioid crisis, and the teacher shortage across Virginia. The election cycle may have lasted longer than anyone expected, but there is a lot of work to get done, and that work began this week, prioritizing the real problems people talk about at home.

The House was officially started on Wednesday, January 10th at 12 noon. It started with Republican Delegate Kirk Cox being unanimously elected to be the 55th Speaker of the House. Speaker Cox set a clear tone for the 2018 Session, pledging to focus on governing, working across the aisle, and leading with character and integrity.

As I mentioned in my newsletter last week, I am headed back to the 2018 General Assembly this week. We convene Wednesday at 12 Noon and, as usual, we will be addressing numerous pieces of legislation.

So that I can get a feel of topics that may be of importance to you, I am sending a link in this newsletter to my 2018 Session Survey. I would appreciate you taking a few minutes to fill it out.

Veterans

There have been many tragic stories of veterans who have been denied services owed to them by our Federal government, or veterans who have died while waiting for appointments at VA hospitals. I am strongly committed to making sure that every veteran that has served in the 60th District, and across Virginia, receives all the benefits that they are entitled to, in return for their service. I had the distinct pleasure of meeting with a young lady recently who, not only is a veteran, but also supports them in every sense of the word.

Sarah Maddox Dunn is one of the Co-Founders of the Piedmont Area Veterans Council, located at 146 N. Main Street in Farmville. Her organization is a federally recognized Community Veteran Engagement Board (CVEB) listed on the Department of Veterans Affairs website. They are a 501C3 that operates and owns an office in Farmville that provides immediate assistance to active duty members, veterans and their family members, in a ten-county coverage area that includes Charlotte, Halifax and Prince Edward Counties.

Merry ChristmasChristmas waves a magic wand over this world, and behold, everything is softer and more beautiful.  Norman Vincent Peale

Last year I started showing my appreciation for the hard work that teachers do in a very special way - with cash donations for classroom supplies!! The program was so well received that I decided to do it again this year.

Anyone could nominate a teacher who had made an impression on them by calling WHLF Radio in South Boston when they heard the Tout the Teacher tagline announced. So far this year, I have had 13 winners.

Dear 60th District Resident,

It is with heart-felt appreciation that I say "thank you" to all who voted for me yesterday. I do not take this position lightly and I pledge to you that I will, to the best of my ability, continue to be your voice in Richmond and to uphold those values we treasure in this part of the Commonwealth. I will continue to serve you through this office in any way I can and will be responsive to your suggestions.

To those who did not vote for me, I will serve you equally. At the end of the day, we all want the same things in life - to be respected and valued, to be safe in our homes, to have quality education for our children and opportunities for a better life.
