Memorial Day 2017

The last Monday in May is Memorial Day - a federal holiday for remembering those who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces.

As we all prepare for the unofficial start of summer vacation season, won't you please stop a minute to remember all those who have paid the ultimate price to ensure that we can enjoy our summers in freedom and peace! I would also encourage you to attend Memorial Day services in your community, and take your children with you, to ensure that future generations never forget the selfless sacrifices of so many men and women who sacrificed their blood for our freedoms!

I was honored to meet with the community and business leaders of Farmville and Prince Edward County in Farmville this Wednesday. Senator Mark Peake joined me as we listened to all the positive things that are happening in the area as well as their concerns, wish lists and possible plans for solutions. Senator Peake and I will be working on identified state issues during the next general assembly session.

There has been a lot of local news this past week, chief of which is the mighty flooded Dan River. Businesses in South Boston and other locations have suffered a lot of damage because of the speed of the rising water. Although the river has now receded, the real work started with the clean-up.

I was at Staunton River State Park when the park hosted Governor McAuliffe on the last of his visits to 37 Virginia State Parks. The Commonwealth has much to offer with the natural beauty found at all these parks and I am proud that we have several in the 60th District.

The Virginia General Assembly met Wednesday, April 5th, for the “reconvened” or “veto” session to consider Governor McAuliffe’s amendments and vetoes.

Governor McAuliffe signed over 700 bills this year, but he vetoed 39 bills and amended 67 more. He made 27 amendments to the conservative and responsible budget passed by the General Assembly.
I was disappointed by the nature of some the Governor’s vetoes that included legislation to empower parents to make their own educational decisions, protect small businesses from national union bosses, and protect the integrity of our voter registration database.

In light of recent events on the world stage, I am once again struck by the sacrifices members of the Armed Forces face on a daily basis. I am proud to be a loyal supporter of our military.

During this past session, I supported numerous pieces of legislation that would enhance or improve the lives of members of the Armed Services. I have highlighted some of these bills below. All of them have been signed by the Governor and will be enacted by July 1st of this year.
