Notes from June 28, 2013
Happy Fourth of July!
On July 1, a number of new laws take effect in Virginia. This year, 2,575 bills and resolutions were introduced in the General Assembly. Only 31 percent of those bills were signed into law. For a listing of some of the new legislation, please see http://dls.virginia.gov/pubs/IDC/IDC13.pdf.
The town of Halifax is getting an early start on the Fourth of July by decorating the town's resident dinosaur, graciously donated by local artist, sculptor, world-class auctioneer and tennis champion, Bob Cage! Compliments go to Susie Robbins for always keeping the spirit of the holiday showing!
Uranium continues to be of vital importance to our district, particularly in Halifax County, and now across the country. A Hollywood movie producer, Liz Rogers, has produced a documentary film, "Hot Water", detailing three years of investigative work on uranium contamination in the nation's water system. Our fight against lifting the ban on uranium mining in Virginia has brought her to our area and a segment in her documentary will feature Halifax County. Please join me in viewing "Hot Water" at the Halifax County High School auditorium on July 13 at 7:00 PM. For more information on the filmmakers and the film, please see http://www.zerohotwater.com/.
OF LOCAL INTEREST:
- VDOT is conducting a "mowing blitz" prior to the July 4th holiday so you should see crews out mowing and picking up trash. You can contact VDOT's 24-hour Customer Service Center at 1-800-FOR-ROAD (800-367-7623) to report sight distance hazards on interstates or roadways. VDOT will always mow an area where a sight distance hazard is reported or observed, regardless of the mowing schedule.
- Patrick Henry's Red Hill is hosting their annual Independence Day Celebration next Thursday, July 4th. Events begin at 3:00 with fireworks at dusk. It's a great way to spend an afternoon with family and friends and to celebrate the birth of the greatest nation on earth!
- The DMV mobile unit will be in Brookneal at Patrick Henry Memorial Library, 204 Lynchburg Avenue, on July 10th from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
