60th District Digest Sept. 4
Summer is quickly becoming a memory as we prepare to celebrate Labor Day this weekend. Labor Day became a federal holiday in 1894 and was signed into law by President Grover Cleveland to celebrate the contributions of the American worker. As you enjoy all those Labor Day sales this weekend, please remember to “Shop Local” and help to sustain all those community shops that make our neighborhoods so very special!
Tout the Teacher Promotion:
Most children in our district have already been back in school for several weeks. This year I wanted to do something to recognize some of the hard-working teachers in our district. With two children in our local school system, I am acutely aware of how so many teachers must take money from their own pockets to supply their classrooms. I am running a radio promotion on WHLF in South Boston and WFLO in Farmville called “Touting the Teacher.” Weekly random drawings are held and winning teachers receive $100 to be used for classroom supplies. I hope you will listen for those announcements on the two stations and enter your favorite teacher in Charlotte, Halifax or Prince Edward Counties!
House Page Program:
The Virginia House of Delegates offers an exceptional program for kids ages 13 or 14 with the House of Delegates Page Program. Speaker Bill Howell selects students for this highly competitive program. During the legislative session that begins on the second Wednesday of January, those students will assist members of the House of Delegates and the House and Clerk’s staff in daily responsibilities to ensure that the session runs smoothly. The House Page Program’s online application opened August 1 and will close at 5pm. October 19. If interested, the application may be accessed here: http://capclass.virginiageneralassembly.gov/PagePrograms/HODPageProgram.php
