In light of recent events on the world stage, I am once again struck by the sacrifices members of the Armed Forces face on a daily basis. I am proud to be a loyal supporter of our military.

During this past session, I supported numerous pieces of legislation that would enhance or improve the lives of members of the Armed Services. I have highlighted some of these bills below. All of them have been signed by the Governor and will be enacted by July 1st of this year.

HB 1537 I co-patroned this bill. It authorizes any member of the US Armed Forces or Virginia National Guard who receives military orders to relocate for at least 90 days to terminate contracts for certain services.

HB 1721 Permits State Board of Community Colleges to charge reduced rate tuition and mandatory fees to any active duty member of the Armed Forces.

HB 1741 Designates the Virginia Route 114 bridge between Montgomery and Pulaski Counties the "Vietnam Veterans Memorial Bridge"

HB 2206 Establishes Virginia Veteran and Family Support program to refer veterans to mental health, physical rehab and other services.

HB 2279/ SB 1164 Requires local departments of social services to report investigations involving children of active duty members of the Armed Forces to family advocacy representatives of the US Armed Forces.

HB 2302/ SB1182 Clarifies duties of the Board of Veterans Services.

HB 2258 Requires the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services to report on its activities related to suicide prevention.

HB 2006 / SB 1228 Sets out the rights and responsibilities under the Virginia Fair Housing Act with respect to maintaining an assistance animal in a dwelling.

HB 2148 / SB 1075 Requires the Veterans Services Foundation to provide annual reports on its funding and services to the General Assembly.

HJ 562 (Constitutional Amendment) Provides that real property tax exemption for the principal residence of a surviving spouse of a disabled military veteran applies if the spouse moves.

Congressman Tom Garrett has a staff member that specializes in assisting veterans with federal issues. I will be happy to assist you with any state issues, should the need arise. Please don't hesitate to contact me anytime. Let us ever be respectful of the sacrifices of our military members!

It is not enough to say we must not wage war. It is necessary to love peace and sacrifice for it.
