In celebration of Virginia Public Service Week, Del. James Edmunds II paid a surprise visit to the South Boston DMV Direct Contact Center on Tuesday, May 9, to thank employees for their service to the commonwealth.
DMV Direct Manager Rita Fisher gave Edmunds, who represents the 60th District, a tour of the facility and introduced him to members of her 50-person staff.
“DMV Direct employees really impressed me with their vast knowledge of the agency and the high level of service they give each and every customer who calls them,” Edmunds said. “I thought Virginia Public Service Week was an excellent time to stop by to thank these folks for the service they provide the commonwealth.”
DMV has two additional customer contact centers in Altavista and Richmond, as well as a Remote Email Team. Combined, they assist more than 1.5 million customers a year.
Always ambassadors for the agency, call center employees made sure to fill Edmunds in on all of the initiatives now available at DMV walk-in customer service centers across the commonwealth, including the nearby South Boston Customer Service Center at 2039 Hamilton Boulevard.
Customers can obtain a certified copy of their Virginia birth certificate, along with marriage, divorce and death records, at any of DMV’s 75 customer service centers and five mobile offices. More than 400,000 birth certificates have been issued at DMV since the partnership with the Department of Health began in 2014.
Customers also can get hunting and fishing licenses and temporary boat registrations, or title and register their boat at DMV, through a partnership with the Department Game and Inland Fisheries. In addition, customers can apply to register to vote, indicate a desire to be an organ donor, and register for the state’s Emergency Contact Program at DMV.
“My constituents in Charlotte, Halifax, Prince Edward and Campbell counties previously would’ve had to travel to Richmond to get a certified copy of a birth certificate or wait for a copy to arrive by mail. Now, they can just stop by their local South Boston DMV,” Edmunds said. “This is an excellent example of smart government.”
Fisher said she and her employees were thrilled by Edmunds’ visit.
“We are so honored that Del. Edmunds took the time to stop by and recognize us as part of Virginia Public Service Week,” Fisher said. “We work behind the scenes, so getting this kind of recognition is very much appreciated.”
